GENERAL INFORMATION:  The apprentice operator will work with and assist the journeyman, senior and chief powerplant operators under the direction of the chief operators for the Wells Project.  Work shifts will normally be scheduled Monday – Thursday, 10 hour shifts, however work may be scheduled as necessary to fulfill work requirements and may be on regular scheduled shift or relief with no regular scheduled shift or work week.  The apprentice operator must satisfactorily complete each six month period of the apprentice training program for powerplant operators, consisting of both on-the-job and classroom type training.  During the apprenticeship period, the apprentice operator will be required to learn and perform all duties of a powerplant operator at a hydroelectric generating station.  The apprentice will be required to learn and comply with safety rules and safe clearance procedures and learn how to direct, place and/or issue protection clearance tags following established procedures. Successful applicant must reside within a 30 mile radius of Wells Dam, or establish such residence within 3 months of employment. There is a one year probationary period associated with this position. 

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, ABILITIES: 

Completion of two years of college, attendance at an appropriate trade school, or equivalent training as an employee at a hydroelectric powerplant

Demonstrated aptitude working with computers, communications systems, and data processing equipment, along with above average report writing and record keeping abilities

A high degree of self-motivation and initiative

Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a clear, concise, and professional manner

Ability to work alone or with others in a wide variety of job disciplines

The ability to work cooperatively and respectfully with others at all times is an absolute requirement for this position 

Current Washington State Driver License and proof of good driving record

Current First Aid/CPR Card

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to distinguish basic colors

Capability of repeated lifting heavy objects, sometimes weighing up to 100 pounds

Ability to work in elevated areas, climb ladders and stairs and walk over uneven surfaces

Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Applicant must be physically able to perform the various duties of a roving powerplant operator including working in hot, cold, wet, and noisy environments

Must have a full range of hearing and sight for personal safety
