General Information:  The Senior Hatchery Specialist work at the direction of the Hatchery Supervisor to complete all aspects of fish production and rearing at the District's fish hatcheries.  Duties associated with this position include broodstock collection, holding and spawning, incubation, larval and juvenile fish production and general fish husbandry including cleaning, feeding and application of treatments, quantification of growth and survival, conversion rates, marking and planting.  The Senior Hatchery Specialist reports to the Hatchery Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist in maintaining accurate and detailed records for fish hatchery activities including numbers of fish on hand, feed conversation rates, production records and use of water
  • Assist in the day to day scheduling of hatchery work
  • Work respectfully and cooperatively with a diverse groups of people and maintain professional interactions at all times in the workplace
  • Ensure compliance with all District policies
  • Supervise and participate in fish rearing activities including, but not limited to, feeding, cleaning, grading, collecting, treating, marking and planting various anadromous and resident cold-water fish species including: spring Chinook, summer/fall Chinook, Coho, steelhead, white sturgeon, rainbow trout and Lahontan cutthroat trout
  • Assist in hatchery maintenance for routine and non-routine projects, including coordinating with other District departments, as necessary
  • Adhere to the District's Safety Policy and Procedures
  • Ability to work in a stand-by status at assigned times in order to respond to hatchery needs after hours and on weekends
  • Ability to wear a respirator and pass a respirator fit test
  • Employees with a Commercial Driver's License must participate in DOT alcohol and drug testing, including marijuana, in compliance with FMCSA regulations

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of fish health and fish husbandry practices is required
  • Good verbal communication skills 
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to communicate in a respectful and cooperative manner with diverse groups of people
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the utilization of computer software programs is preferred (MSWord, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, etc.)
  • Physical capability of working in a hatchery environment with exposure to outdoor weather, wet conditions and temperature extremes
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly during a work day
  • Valid Washington State Driver License and evidence of good driving record. Candidates with a Class B CDL Driver's License with tanker and air brake endorsements are preferred
  • Current First Aid/CPR Card

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor's of Science degree in fish husbandry/culture or closely related science degree is preferred. A combination of education and experience may be considered for candidates without a Bachelor's of Science degree.

Preferred Years of Experience:

Salmonid culture – two or more years

Supervising hatchery employees – two or more years

The Senior Hatchery Specialist may be provided hatchery housing as part of their total compensation package. Details will be discussed during interviews.

This is an administrative position and is therefore NOT subject to any of the conditions contained in the Collective Bargaining Agreement other than those benefits which apply to all employees.  There is a one-year probationary period associated with this position.
