Feeding Habits: Because they feed primarily on fish, crawdads and other aquatic species, kingfishers are almost always found near water.

Unique Features: Kingfisher breeding pairs nest in tunnels, which they excavate in high river banks. Kingfishers often hunt by perching on branches that overhang body of water, and then dive headfirst into the water. The kingfisher’s dagger-like bill is shaped perfectly so that it doesn’t splash when hitting the water, which is said to have inspired the design of the Japanese bullet train.
