Feeding Habits: Male and female mosquitoes primarily feed on plant nectar and sap. Only female mosquitoes require blood in order to get the protein needed for laying eggs.

Unique Features: There are over 40 different mosquito species in Washington state. The two most common are the Northern House mosquito and the Western Encephalitis mosquito.

Mosquitoes are important pollinators, as they transfer pollen from flower to flower when feeding on nectar. They are also an important food source to other wildlife, like birds, bats, lizards and frogs, and for aquatic species that eat their larvae.
