Getting Started

Can I sign up for internet service if I rent my home?

Yes. We just need permission from the property owner before we can get you connected.

I don’t have an electric account with the PUD. Can I still get internet service?

Yes. You can sign up for a stand-alone fiber internet account, even without electric service. However, the service address must be in Douglas County.

Can I have more than one internet account at the same property?

Yes. Multiple internet service accounts are allowed at one property.

I currently have wireless internet service. Can I switch to wired service?

It depends on your location. The best next step is to apply, and we’ll take a look at what’s available for your home.

Do I need my own router?

No. We have routers available — just let us know when you sign up and we’ll get you set up.

Installation

What’s the process to get connected?

Apply online or call the PUD. We’ll ask a few questions and get your e-signature, then place an order for our crews. They’ll build a plan to bring service to your home. If you need in-home installation, our crew will connect your router to a device to confirm everything is working before they leave — then you’re ready to enjoy fast, reliable internet.

How long does the connection process take?

It depends on your situation. If you’ve had service through one of our provider partners before, the process is usually quick. If we need to install conduit (underground piping that protects the fiber cable) or extend cable to reach your home, it takes a bit longer. We’re always working to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Will I need to be home during installation?

Yes, if you need the in-home portion of the installation (connecting your router and devices). No, you don’t need to be home for the outside installation work.

What’s the box on the side of my house?

That’s a surge arrestor — a device that helps protect your equipment from lightning or stray voltage on the line. Please note: it’s still your responsibility to protect your own devices, such as with a surge protector power strip.

Service & Speed

What speeds can I expect with 1-gig service?

You can expect upload and download speeds up to about 900 Mbps (megabits per second, a measure of internet speed).

What can I do with that much speed?

Plenty. 1-gig service easily supports streaming on multiple devices at once, video calls, online gaming, smart-home devices, and working from home — all at the same time without slowdowns.

Billing & Cost

How much does internet service cost?

1-gig service costs $35 per month.

What if I have questions about my bill?

Just like your electric service, give us a call at 509-884-7191 or email billing@dcpud.org.

Outages, Troubleshooting & Support

If the power goes out, will my internet still work?

No. During a large outage, we may need to restore electric service before internet service. Rest assured, our crews will keep working until all service is fully restored.

What happens if I need to call the support line?

Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–10 p.m., a Douglas County PUD employee will troubleshoot with you directly, or take your information, research the issue, and follow up. Nights, weekends, and holidays, your call will go to a trusted third-party support team who will also work to assist you. If they can’t get your service restored, you’ll be at the top of our list when we’re back in the office.

What do I do if I see a downed power line?

Do not touch it. Stay away and call us right away at 509-884-7191.

What do I do if my internet connection isn’t working?

Try these steps first:

  • Check the power. Make sure the router is plugged in and turned on.
  • Restart. Unplug the router. Wait 30 seconds. Plug in the router and wait 2 minutes.
  • Check the cables. Confirm the ethernet(also known as CAT5) cable from the router’s WAN or Internet port (often a different color), is connected to the ethernet wall plate.
  • New router. If this is a new router, please download the app and follow the setup instructions. The Wi-Fi name and password changed to the defaults listed on the bottom of the new router. Please “forget” the old network and join the new one on every device or use the routers app to rename and update the password to match the old router.
  • Existing router. If this is a router from the last ISP, it may still be set up for the old ISP. It may need a factory reset.
  • Try a wired connection. Plug a computer directly into the router with an ethernet cable. If that works, the problem is Wi-Fi, not the service.
  • Call the ISP. Douglas PUD will help troubleshoot over the phone and will send a technician on site if required. Notify the PUD at 509-884-7191 or dccnsupport@dcpud.org
